Diabetes is perhaps one of the oldest diagnosed diseases of the world. At the same time, it has also been observed that diabetes can bring about many visible changes in the body, one of them being hair loss. This led people to ponder – is there a connection between diabetes and hair loss?

If we go by the statistics of diabetic persons alone too, we can find a definite propensity in them for hair loss. This is more predominant in men than in women, because after all hair loss is more common in men. Also, in all diabetic persons, there is some kind of deterioration of their hair – if it is not total hair loss, it will be at least thinning of the hair, discoloration or the hair might become easily removable from the scalp.

Why does hair loss occur in diabetic persons?

The following are some of the reasons why hair loss is seen more in people with diabetes:-

1.     Diabetes is essentially a hormonal disorder. It happens when there is a lack of insulin in the body, which is important to utilize the carbohydrates present in the body. It is known that hair loss is also caused due to hormonal imbalances. Hence, both diabetes and hair loss are linked from the hormonal point of view.

2.     Diabetes weakens the immune system of the person's body. That is the reason why the person gets infections easily. Such infections might occur on the skin of the head, known as the scalp. The infections will cause direct hair loss.

3.     Stress is a factor that is seen commonly in diabetic patients. Stress can also lead to hair loss.

4.     Diabetes also affects the normal metabolic cycle of the human body. In a healthy person, hair keeps falling from the body at the rate of a few hundred per day. But these hairs are replenished continuously, so the differences are not found in the total amount of hair. However, in diabetic people, this normal metabolic cycle becomes erratic and that's the reason why the hair once lost does not return back, or comes back quite late.

How to seek treatment for hair loss connected with diabetes?

It must be primarily kept in mind that diabetes is a much more serious problem than hair loss is, and indeed the hair loss is probably just a symptom of the diabetes. Hence, the most effective way to tackle the problem will be to answer the condition of diabetes itself.

Diabetes needs a stringent routine to be adopted in order to keep the blood sugar level at a proper value. These methods should be followed with regularity and perfection. If the diabetic state is not allowed to aggravate, then the hair loss will not aggravate either. It is observed that diabetes related hair loss begins at the start of the ailment, and worsens as the diabetic condition aggravates. Hence, it is necessary to check the diabetes first.

The doctor providing the patient treatment for diabetes will also have some suggestions for controlling the hair loss. Diabetic persons can discuss their hair loss concerns with them too.
